GENERAL INFORMATION

KOF Swiss Economic Institute cordially invites you to the next EUROCONSTRUCT Conference in Zurich. Late afternoon on 26th you have the possibility to attend a guided walk through the previous industrial area in the centre of Zurich. You will get a fascinating look at the transportation of a large brownfield area into a modern city structure, including the construction of the new Prime Tower (126m).

In the evening, the welcome dinner will be arranged in the Escher-Villa in the Belvoirpark. The Villa was the home of the famous Alfred Escher, who constructed the Gotthard Base Tunnel. He was also one of the founders of Credit Swiss, Swiss Life and the Polytechnikum (ETH).

The conference itself will take place on Friday 27th in Radisson Blu at the Zurich Airport. The direct flights from main European cities and excellent railway connections make the location a perfect choice for the conference.

BENEFITS OF PARTICIPATION

Why participate? The aim of the Conference is to assess the worsening state of the European economy and its negative impact on the construction industry over the recent past. The breakdown of the global economy is so significant and has such large implications that the reasons for it, and its negative results, require deep analysis and evaluation.
Stagnation and even recession in European construction is now fact; thus the answers to the following questions are of great importance:
  • How deep is the decline in European construction as a whole and in the particular countries likely to be? Are there, perhaps, countries that will escape the recession in construction?
  • Which construction sectors (residential, non-residential or civil engineering) are the most sensitive to the crisis?
  • Has the construction industry already seen its biggest fall in production, or is there worse to come? What is the situation in particular countries in the Euroconstruct network and in individual construction sectors?
  • What economic factors need to come into play to stop the decline and when are they likely to be seen?
  • Which players in the construction market will be worst affected by the crisis and when?
  • What measures are being taken by governments and other authorities to limit the construction market crisis in particular countries?
  • What is the role of EU cohesion funds in the limitation of the negative effects of the economic crisis on construction in Central-Eastern EU countries?
  • To what extent has the financial turmoil affected the economies and construction markets of non-EU countries such as Russia and the Ukraine?
Two hundred decision makers and experts representing more than 20 countries from Western and Eastern Europe and overseas are expected in Warsaw on June 4-5, 2009.

The Warsaw EUROCONSTRUCT conference targets decision makers in the construction industry and related markets as well as the financial and consulting sector and it offers a wide range of advantages.

A leading international event
The Conference is part of the biannual series of presentations on the latest medium-term outlook for construction in Europe: exclusive to Euroconstruct, traditionally followed by a hundred or so international participants and a large delegation from the organising country. Following the adoption of the “European Climate Energy Package”, the Conference will also look, from a long-term point of view, at the consequences for construction of the fight against global warming.

Answers a series of key questions
When will we see the recovery of the European economy, which still appears to be sinking deeper? And meanwhile, what changes are taking place in construction, which is also very dependent on local factors? Will the developments in the different sub-sectors offset each other or is there a risk of them reinforcing each other? How should we respond to the new objectives drawn up by the European Commission in its 2020 plan to cut greenhouse gases? And, even more importantly, how can we take up and win the climate challenge by 2050? What changes should we expect from this for construction?

Aimed at a wide audience
At all those involved in construction: producers of materials, plant and equipment for construction, designers – architects, engineers, investors, etc. – contractors, financiers, etc. At observers, mainly from the economic world (financial analysts, macro-economists, consultants, etc.), who are interested in construction trends, as a market or sector.
At all those involved in the fight against climate change, including politicians.

Offers exclusively
• First access to the latest information, including projections to 2011, and to the speakers’ presentations and commentaries.
• The opportunity to discuss with Euroconstruct experts and to meet the representatives of the biggest companies in the construction sector of Europe and the rest of the world.
• Participation in the reception evening and a special rate for the “Country Report”.
